Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner

Following the backpage headlines that Mets closer Frank Francisco the Mets made sure to prevent something that they couldn’t avoid doing the last Subway Series: Getting swept.  On Friday night, Jonathan Niese and Andy Pettitte both took the mound.  These two southpaws met earlier in the season as Pettitte had gotten the upper hand, defeating Niese and the Mets.  This game, however, would be less fortunate for Andy Pettitte the second time around.

After a 50 minute rain delay both teams took the field and it seemed like stopage favored the Mets.  A five run inning, fueled by popular red-head Justin Turner, turned out to be all the runs the Mets needed on the rainy night in Flushing as the Amazin’s edged the Bombers 6-4.

A Mets game wouldn’t be complete without some late-inning drama.  After Frank Francisco made comments to reporters calling the Yankees ‘chickens’ it almost seemed predictable that the hot head closer would have something to do with the outcome of the game.  And that he did.  With the tying runs on base and the always dangerous Mark Texiera at the plate representing the go ahead run, Francisco shut the door by having Tex pop to second.

• Niese went 6 1/3 innings allowing 2 earned runs
• Ike Davis (8) homered
• Alex Rodriguez (12), Andrew Jones (7), and Robinson Cano (15) all homered for the Yanks

Well that was a little interesting. You know, I’ve been a Mets fan my whole life and I just felt that it was inevitable that Francisco was going to be in this game at one point or another. In New York when you talk the talk you gotta walk the walk and Francisco did just that. Niese continues to impress me as the young lefty gives the Mets yet another strong outing. I think the Mets are perfect example on why pitching is key. The Mets are completing a nine series stretch in which they play .500 plus teams and they had fared well so far going 11-9.  We’ll see if they could keep this pace up.
